pazhassiraja

Wayanad stands unique in its political history. This was the only taluk in Malabar which never bowed its neck to the Mysore yoke and which defied the British power until its ruler fell, fighting against the troops of the East India Company. This ruler was the Kerala Varma Raja of Pazhassi Kovilagam (Pazhassi Palace)of Kottayam dynasty and his history is practically the political history of Wayanad from 1786 to 30th November, 1805. Pasassiraja fought against Hyder Ali and Tippu Sulthan the rulers of Mysore, with the help of the tribal warriors and the Nair chieftains of Wayanad.

He also stood against the atrocities of the British fearlessly. But at the end he had to sacrifice his life on the banks of Kannarampuzha near Pulpally and became a great martyr for the freedom of our country. It is believed that Pasassiraja's swords and other weapons were thrown into a pond which later came to be known as Kaithakolly very near to the Sita temple.
